In 1919, Benito Mussolini, a journalist and ex-soldier, created his own political party called the Fascist Party. Members of the party were called "The Black Shirts". They obeyed strict rules and they fought many politicians. When the Fascist Party became unstoppable, Victor Emmanuel III, the king of Italy, handed Mussolini the position of prime minister. Soon after, Mussolini grew to become a powerful Italian dictator.

Mussolini became acquainted with Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi group. They shared philosophies and executed their nefarious plans. In 1940, Italy entered World War II alongside Germany and declared war on the Allies. However, Italy was completely unprepared for such combat. It lacked strong military power and resources.
