When people think of black historical figures they remember Martin Luther King, Rosa Park, or Malcolm X, which is great because these individuals have contributed a lot of time and effort to the civil rights movements, but most of us learn about them in school and not through our own personal investigation. Because of this we often overlook other great black historical figures that aren't mentioned in school as often or at all. While doing my own personal investigation I discovered a man so incredible and so brilliant that it astonished me that he wasn’t even mentioned in school. This amazing person is Benjamin Banneker and he was an african american that had a passion for science, thrived doing what he loved, and broke barriers while doing it.
Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9, 1731 in Baltimore County, Maryland a free man. Banneker from an early age sought knowledge whenever and wherever he could while growing up on his family’s tobacco farm, especially about science and math. Most black men were at Banneker’s age, who was 59 at the time, were retired after years of doing taxing labor or enslaved, but Banneker was now traveling with Andrew Ellicott and working alongside him as an a fellow intellectual. However the work was taxing for him because of his age but he craved this kind of work and it allowed him learn more about astronomy helping him eventually complete his almanac.
