In Grant Moss Jr’s story “Before the End of Summer”, the protagonist Bennie changes from being fearful to brave when the subject of death arises. As the story begins, Bennie has just been introduced to death and is scared and uncomfortable. He overhears that his grandmother will pass away soon and he starts to panic. In support of this, the author states, “His grandmother was going to die. She might even be dead now […] And now he was crying and he couldn’t stop crying”(2). In this quotation, Bennie cries uncontrollably because the fear of death has been ingrained into his mind. Towards the middle of the story, it is shown that Bennie hasn't become fearless yet with the theme of death but is beginning to question it. In the short story,
