Similar to most “modern” novels, the text tells the story in a typical narrative format. Although multiple forms of figurative language, such as similes, metaphors, personification, and allegories are used in the text, Golding typically strays from using kennings. Additionally, the text contains dialogue and quotations, making it easy to sense the emotion in the scene along with the ability to see how the characters react off of each other. For example, the battle over power and the sense of civilization between Jack and Ralph is easily distinguished in their conversations. Beowulf has a lack of this in it’s text, making doing so slightly more difficult. Understanding the time period in which each text was written can help the reader see the differences in the style of storytelling between “Beowulf” and” Lord of the Flies”.
