Beowulf faced many challenges throughout the epic poem, three of which are battles. These fights were between Beowulf and Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Each fight contains similar characteristics but also some differences. They show Beowulf’s greatness as well as his weaknesses.
The first challenge that Beowulf faced was against the demon, Grendel. Grendel was described as a “fiend out of hell” and a “grim demon.” He roamed the marshes near the great and new mead hall, Heorot. He became annoyed by the cheering and partying of the hall, so he decided to attack. He approached at night after the warriors had drunk a few drinks. He snatched 30 men and returned to his lair. He returned and wreaked havoc upon the great hall for 12 winters
