I recently read one of the best epic poems ever written. “Beowulf” is an Anglo Saxon epic that takes place in Denmark during the sixth century. Beowulf, the main character, is the hero of the story because he saves Hrothgar and the Danes from Grendel and other monsters. Even though it was written a long time ago, “Beowulf” has many important lessons and themes throughout the epic that are still relevant in today’s world. These include how we treat each other, the dangers of pride and greed, what makes a great leader, etc. The three themes of this epic that stand out to me are heroism, loyalty, and Good vs. Evil.

Evil. Grendel, the devilish beast who attacks Herot for 12 years, is evil. Beowulf, the great hero who saves Hrothgar and the Danes as well as many more, is good. Other examples of Good vs. Evil in this epic is Beowulf vs. Grendel’s mother and Beowulf vs. the dragon. Venturing closer, his talon was raised to attack Beowulf where he lay on the bed; he was bearing in with open claw when the alert hero's comeback and armlock forestalled him utterly. The captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth. (Beowulf 50) The monster wrenched and wrestled with him but Beowulf was mindful of his mighty strength, the wondrous gifts God had showered on him: He relied for help on the Lord of All, on His care and favour. So he overcame the foe, brought down the hell-brute. (Beowulf 88) The two quotes above are describing Beowulf’s battles with Grendel. Beowulf is good because he saves people’s lives.
