People all around the world have the freedom to have different opinions; sometimes they agree, however most of the time, people argue and fight over who is right and wrong. In the passages “Participation Trophies Send a Dangerous Message” and “Participation Trophies Send a Powerful Message,” the writers are arguing over the controversial topic of whether kids should be given participation trophies when they are no winner. Both writers have a credential background of being professional psychologists and have substantial evidence to back their opinion, however, Betty Berden has more logical reasoning for his opinion on why children should not be given participation awards. While appreciation is good, giving kids the expectation that “We are all winners” is a bad influence. With this mindset, children will grow up thinking they deserve praise for the most rudimentary task, such as showing up to work on time or doing their job properly. One might refute that participation awards are needed so that the less talented children “deserve to feel some accomplishment”. Through this statement, one may reconsider that their sense of accomplishment should come from the overall win, not the individual effort. Putting forth effort is good, however if it is not talented effort that will benefit the team, they do not deserve an award when their effort has only held the other team members back from opportunities. When one considers this, the less talented children get awards from team banquets and celebratory parties, not trophies that real winners
