Bessie Smith, also known as Empress of the Blues, was a prominent blues singer during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1894, Smith began her career as a street performer before being discovered by a talent scout. She went on to record over 160 songs and became one of the highest-paid black performers of her time. Smith's music was known for its raw emotion and powerful vocals, and she was a major influence on later blues and jazz singers. Despite facing discrimination and segregation, Smith continued to perform and record until her untimely death in a car accident in 1937.
