I am that girl who takes advantage of every single opportunity that is presented before her - whether it is to serve as a guest speaker at AP Night, risk getting my lacrosse stick checked (hit) as I see an open space to perform an underhand shot, or compete with a 55 year-old man for a free t-shirt at a Citadel game. Though you will laugh at my cliche statement (unless you have met me before) I long for opportunities to make a real impact. My school’s buried club was just the miracle.
Many tend to think that they need to make a noteworthy discovery or achievement in order to make a difference. However, a simple act of selfless service within a small community can account for tremendous impacts. When announced I was voted as Beta Club president, my mind ignited and began racing with millions of ideas and hopes. For years, my school’s Beta Club was known as a mere title to put on college applications. “This is my opportunity,” I thought to myself. I did not want to straddle by and use this as a title on my resume. So, I stood before 150 students and claimed, “this year will be a change. We will focus on doing service projects for our community rather than simply donating money.”

We sponsored a food drive, raised over $1200 by fundraising, volunteered at community events, and most recently, partnered with Habitat for Humanity to construct and paint homes. Future service projects that are currently set in stone include sponsoring children in our community for Christmas, creating the first school-wide talent show to raise money for Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and volunteering at the annual ALS Walk in Greenville, South Carolina. With this position, I finally received my chance to impact change. I have taken advantage of this opportunity to DO
