September 25, 2017 Betsy Ross Betsy Ross was born on January 1, 1752 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the fourth generation american and the eighth out of 17 children and her real name is Elizabeth Griscom. Her parents were Quakers, so she went to a Quaker school and there she learned how to sew and do other common crafts. After she finished school her father took her to a local upholsterer where she met her future husband, John Ross. They got married in 1772, and she decided to marry outside the Quaker religion. They opened an upholstery business together but John ended up dying in 1776, so Betsy had to run it by herself. Betsy ended up marrying two other men, and one thing that I thought was interesting was that they knew each other.

People finally found out about her story a century later, by her grandson, William Canby. Her grandson explains that General George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross visited Betsy and gave her an idea of what they wanted the flag to look like. Nobody knows if this was a true fact, but once her grandson told “Harper’s New Monthly Magazine” her story it became a part of history. Some people think that George Ross put in a word for her since he was the uncle of her first husband John Ross. Was she a liar or did William make everything
