Many people assume that with age comes dreaded health concerns, a newfound slowness and sluggishness, and the inability to perform everyday tasks. To one older woman, however, age is everything but something to be dejected about as she remarks, “I think it's your mental attitude. So many of us start dreading age in high school and that's a waste of a lovely life. 'Oh... I'm 30, oh, I'm 40, oh, 50.' Make the most of it” (BrainyQuote.com). This is how Betty M. White expresses her outlook on aging when confronted face-to-face with it. Although White assumed she would be cast as the pert and man-hungry southern belle, Blanche, who was similar to her character on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, she held open arms to Rose. Acting alongside her longtime friends Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty was a miracle in the making (“Betty White.” Newsmakers). Focused around three older women who live together and help each other through their daily struggles and predicaments, no one thought the show would take off as it did. Each of the characters had their own style of humor. Quick, witty comebacks were as essential to one, as self-deprecating jokes were to another. Regardless of style, most everyone thought the hilarity made the show attractive. This was revolutionary since the thought of older women making their audience explode with laughter was impractical to many (“Betty White Celebrates”). The show was so successful that it ran for seven beloved seasons and topped NBC’s number one at the time, The Cosby Show, for a number of weeks (“Betty White Biography”). Coupling the previous, she was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995, along with owning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Moreover, at age eighty-eight in 2010, she took the stage at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center and became the oldest person to ever have hosted Saturday Night Live.
