Bharati Mukherjee in her short essay Two Ways to Belong in America uses multiple rhetorical strategies in order to emphasize her argument and further highlight her viewpoint. By Mukherjee using comparison/contrast she highlights the differences between herself and her sister, Mira. Bharati Mukherjee unlike her sister is open to Americanization and gladly becomes an American citizen. For example, Mukherjee states “I was opting for fluidity, self-innovation, blue jeans, and T-shirts, and renouncing 3,000 years (at least) of caste observant, “pure culture” marriage in the Mukherjee family,” this highlights that Bharati was very open to assimilating to American culture by marrying an American man and gaining American citizenship(Mukherjee 273).
