Texas A&M has many traditions to welcome and initiate freshmen students into the university. From Fish Camp to Howdy Camp, freshmen are offered a chance to make friends before starting their college education. Some freshmen come fully prepared for college, or so they think. College is a completely different experience than high school. The campus is bigger, the classes are bigger, the professors are tough, and you have so many new responsibilities to take on as an adult that is now on their own. So ultimately, all freshmen could definitely use a helping hand in their first year of college
Being on your own, with all the responsibilities of an adult can be very overwhelming and can cause extra stress or even sometimes depression. Therefore, the freshmen that are attending Texas A&M from out of state could especially benefit from the tradition. Having someone around their age that they can confide in could really comfort them while being so far away from their family and home.

This is why a Big Sister/Brother, Little Sister/Brother tradition should be implemented. My tradition would offer freshmen an opportunity of having someone to confide in that have walked in their shoes before. The upperclassmen would be there for any questions/concerns the freshmen might have. The big/little tradition would allow upperclassmen to be sort of like an adviser or personal counselor to the freshmen. The first-year students would be able to learn from the experiences and/or mistakes of the students who have been there for a while. For example, the upperclassmen could warn the freshmen of certain professors or classes that are especially more difficult, or they could advise them to get involved in something that could benefit them that they previously wouldn’t have known
