A person with biliary cancer will initially develop symptoms associated with hepatitis which includes yellowing of the skin or jaundice, abdominal pain, sudden weight loss, and bloating. These symptoms are caused by the inflammation of the liver which occurs when the bile duct cannot drain the biles from the liver.

All types of cancer can be diagnosed into different stages and levels. It can go from stage 0 to stage 4, which depends on how rampant is the spread of cancerous cells to other parts of the body.
The most dangerous stage of cancer which involves the wide-spread of cancer cells from the main site to other parts of the body is known as stage 4. With biliary cancer, stage 4 bile duct cancer can be divided into two categories known as stage 4a and stage 4b.
Stage 4a is a category of stage 4 biliary cancer which involves cancer cells that have already spread to the main blood vessels and lymph nodes in the body. Meanwhile, stage 4b refers to the category of stage 4 bile duct cancer which has spread from the bile duct to distant parts of the body.
