Biliary cancer or bile duct cancer is a type of cancer which affects the lining of the bile ducts of the body. The bile ducts are responsible for collecting the bile produced by the liver which is essential for digestion and transporting it to the small intestine through the gallbladder.

Bile duct cancer usually affects three parts of the bile duct which includes the intrahepatic part of the bile duct or the duct found within the liver; the extrahepatic part of the bile duct located at the notch of the liver; and the distal extrahepatic part of the bile duct which is found near the intestine?

All types of cancer can be diagnosed into different stages and levels. It can go from stage 0 to stage 4, which depends on how rampant is the spread of cancerous cells to other parts of the body.

The most dangerous stage of cancer which involves the wide-spread of cancer cells from the main site to other parts of the body is known as stage 4. With biliary cancer, stage 4 bile duct cancer can be divided into two categories known as stage 4a and stage 4b.

Stage 4a is a category of stage 4 biliary cancer which involves cancer cells that have already spread to the main blood vessels and lymph nodes in the body. Meanwhile, stage 4b refers to the category of stage 4 bile duct cancer which has spread from the bile duct to distant parts of the body.
