On Monday February 19, two dancers from the Arnie Zane dance company, Carlo Villanueva and Christina Robson visited the Holy Cross campus to have an informal showing of their company’s dance repertoire. Through their inspirational candidness about their individual artistic processes and their desire to inform the audience on all of the technical aspects of their dance, they forced me to reconsider what defines modern dance. For instance, before they even began dancing and performing for the audience, they told us that in their pieces they did not use traditional lyrical or instrumental music, but rather used the voice of Bill T Jones narrating an often personal experience. I thought that this was a unique dance style that sort of moved away from choreographers who really focused on their importance of music in dances such as Mark William Morris. …show more content…
This was certainly present in the dance where some of the movements, completely by chance, corresponded with events that Bill T Jones was narrating about. Yet, this use of music can also prove problematic, especially when considering the prolific use of chance in his performances. For instance, during their particular performance there were several instances where Bill T Jones was narrating about important and controversial issues such as race, sexuality, and politics and either one or both of the dancers was performing a joyful and exuberant choreography. I think that this could potentially detract from Jones’s focus on important topics and themes such as these because it does not treat with a sense of seriousness that is often necessary. However, I understand his desire to interconnect the arts with major social issues that plague our modern
