It was 7am and I woke with a splitting headache to the rude sound of bells tolling on either side of me. The sharp early morning light made me squint in pain as a nauseous feeling rolled through my stomach. This was not the sound of the gentle sing-songy chime of the Campanile bells. No, indeed it was the sound of obnoxious frat boys ringing their bells to signal to all of Greek row that it was a ceremonious Game day, aka another excuse to profusely day drink and be rowdy at ungodly hours. The main driving factors behind first year students tendency to drink stems from first year student expectations of college culture and social pressures from new social groups. Some other main factors that might contribute to the binge use of alcohol in college could come from the unstructured nature of college life, inconsistencies in the enforcement of underage drinking laws, less interactions with parents and adult figures, and the ease of access or availability to alcohol in college.
