How can the individual effect a system? They can affect the system simply by being needed. Systems crave intelligent people in order for the system to evolve and become more efficient. The intelligence of an individual measures his or hers ability to make a change. An intelligent individual can play his cards right and affect they system they are a part of through the art of manipulation. To uses their intelligence to manipulate a system they must do three things, set the scene, gain influence, and leverage position. These three things can be seen in Malcolm Gladwell’s “power of context “, Karen Ho’s “Biographies of Hegemony”, and Steve Johnson’s “The Myth of The Ant Queen”. The power of manipulation is not the only the tool of system, the individual can use it to if they have intelligence. Intelligent individuals are the red blood cell equivalent in systems. A constant stream of intelligent individuals are a way for systems to stay in competition with one and another. Systems battle on the plane of intelligence rather than the physical plane. They compete with each other by trying to outsmart each other in field of competition that system chooses to compete in. For example, in banking each investment bank is trying to beat one and another to the punch trying to find the new stock to invest in, or a new market to short. In order to do this they need the intelligent individuals to find out what the newest stock is. But they also need to keep intelligent individuals, so they compete at top ivy league schools to keep recruiting highly intelligent individuals.
