The introduction of the athlete biological passport is new technology which, by monitoring a series of tests over time, will decrease the number of athletes doping in major sport events. The passport tracks nine characteristics of the athlete which makes it more effective than previous tests which could only test for banned substances. Biological passports will help eliminate cheating in these events, however doping is still widespread and athletes are rarely caught even though there is current biological testing (Source B - Credible). The biological passports show promise by ensuring all athletes are tested to create fair sport events.
There has been an increase in corruption, with Russia running a doping program for its athletes in 2014 for the Winter Olympics. Russia also try to 'buy silence' by paying members of the Congress to cover up the doping done by their athletes during the Biathlon World Championships. Even though the main objective of this cover up was to protect the Russian athletes that had doped this does not justify the use of performance enhancing drugs.
During the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, Russian athletes without a history of doping were allowed to participate.
