The biopsychosocial model is a contributor to the realization that multiple factors contribute to mental health and disease. The biopsychosocial model is mostly known as the mind-body connection, is in contrast to the traditional biomedical model of medicine. George L. Engel proposed the biopsychosocial model, the model is a framework for understanding mental health and disease that posits that biological, social, and psychological factors, not just biological factors, all play a significant role in human disease and illness. The purpose of the biopsychosocial model is to take a bird’s-eye view and assert that simply looking at biological factors alone, which had been the prevailing view of disease at time Engel was writing.
Biomedical model is a conceptual model of illness that excludes psychological and social factors and includes only biologic factors in an attempt to understand a person's medical illness or disorder. A biomedical model is a surrogate for a human being, or a human biologic system, that can be used to understand normal and abnormal function from gene to phenotype and to provide a basis for preventive or therapeutic intervention in human diseases. …show more content…
The major categories of biological causes of mental illness are Genes, Infections, Nutrition, Toxins, Physical Trauma, and Hormones.
