In the mid 1930s, states like Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, and Colorado were hit by huge sand and dust storms. The conditions from the dust storms were so bad that most of the population had to move west. From 1900 to 1930 family's would buy or lease small areas of land in the plain states. Crops were hard to grow there but with lots of hard work the farmers were able to grow wheat and corn.
Soon after in 1931 the farmers were unable to grow because of the dryness. America was already in debt from the Great Depression so it affected us badly. For five long years, farmers corn and wheat crop failed. With no income farmers could not pay mortgages. The soil was becoming loose and dry because there was no grass roots
