Mortimer enters the office and retells the myth of Hugo Baskerville, who captured the daughter of a yeoman and imprisoned her. In addition, he sees Barrymore looking out at the moors while holding a candle up to the window. A few nights later, Watson and Sir Henry find Barrymore in the same setting. They spot another candle out on the moors, which is a signal for Barrymore. Sir Henry fires Barrymore for plotting against him, but Mrs. Barrymore explains that they were just attempting to aid Selden, the escaped convict, who is Mrs. Barrymore’s brother.
