Blackbeard (or Black Beard) was a highly feared pirate, and also one of the best. His “name” (pirates mostly used fake names) was Edward Teach. He was born around 1680, in Bristol, England. He had a very wealthy family. He was a privateer in Queen Anne’s War, which is probably where he got his knowledge of sailing and pirating. “Pirate” actually comes from privateer, which is a person who is hired to attack other nation’s ships. Eventually, privateers began to attack all ships, therefore becoming pirates. Blackbeard left privateering and went to New Providence, an island in the Bahamas. He joined a pirate crew under Benjamin Hornigold. Edward was given a small sloop, the Adventure, recently captured by Hornigold’s crew. Their group was soon joined by another crew, with two more ships, commanded by Stede Bonnet in 1716. Not long after, Benjamin retired and left Teach in charge. …show more content…
Eventually, Teach and his crew moved their Base of Operations from New Providence to Charleston, South Carolina. Preying on the ships coming in and out of SC, Edward attacked 3 ships before blockading the port, where no ships were allowed through for about 6 days. During that time, 9 ships trying to leave were stopped and relieved of their goods. On one occasion, a crew of one ship, the Crowley, were taken prisoner by Blackbeard’s crew for half of the day.
