Throughout Bless Me Ultima, the development of moral independence is shown numerous times. When Antonio discovers the golden carp he thinks to himself, “I was saddened by what I had learned. I had seen beauty, but the beauty had burdened me with responsibility.” (Anaya 119). He realizes that with the gain of knowing of the golden carp, he will not be able to share his knowledge of the god. Antonio is saddened because he continues to question his beliefs and truths.
