Jada Schulz Mrs. Lind Advanced English April 24, 2024 My Shaping of Decision-making In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Blink, it describes the concepts of how we think. This book helps us reflect on the source of our actions and experiences daily and why we do them. These are just a few of my own experiences that Blink has applied to my life when it comes to decision making. Many things can influence you, in my instance, it is the people I'm close to. For example, my parents are a huge influence when it comes to how I make decisions. They both taught me everything I know and have shown me how to be aware of my surroundings. I judge with just a glance as a reason to keep myself guarded from the unknown, especially when it comes to strangers and meeting new people. This reminded me of how my friendships have a very strong influence on me as well. We are all very caring and supportive of each other and I don't know what I would do without them in my life. This is a good example of Think About Dr. King and how, “we are not helpless in the face of our first impressions” (Gladwell 96). When I was finally able to open up and let more people into my life, I was very self-conscious about what other people would think of me. It was my unconsciousness again that would just assume a person didn't like me based on something about me and that I couldn't fully be myself. After some time I finally realized that I was the one in control and that I could positively use thin-slicing “ by changing the experiences that comprise those impressions” (Gladwell 97). Just realizing that I had control, benefited me and helped me meet the amazing friends I have who truly understand me. Because of this, I've been able to open up more around people.
