The Orange County Family Justice Center (OCFJC) is an innovative client-centered organization which was founded in 2007 and is located in the city of Anaheim, California. According to the OCFJC’s website the mission statement of the organization is as follows: “We provide a long-term positive impact on our community by compassionately providing effective, coordinated services and support to people whose lives have been touched by child abuse, domestic violence, elder/dependent adult abuse, or sexual assault.” (OCFJC, n.d.) During my internship as part of the University of California, Irvine’s Blum Immersive Field Study it was apparent that the organization was meeting many of its goals. Furthermore, I have become more aware of the resources available to DV victims, especially victims who are women. However, I have also been made aware that there is still need for more resources for DV victims, even with the resources available some victims aren’t being served. For example, some services aren’t able to be accessed unless you are a US citizen and some shelters don’t take in male DV victims. Furthermore, although we are removing victims from this situation we aren’t not addressing environmental and social factors which might make DV more likely. Then there is the issue of the abusers, they also need some sort of help in order to prevent this type of behavior in the future with other partners. What type of resources are available to abusers? Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a home with DV and witnessed it growing up that I’m more curious about these other aspects. Taken together my experiences with DV as a child and as victim as well as my time at the OCFJC that I have become more interested in the subject of domestic violence. I hope to continue to contribute in this area and would welcome the opportunity to do research especially with prevention and education programs targeting DV perpetrators. It just seems like so many of our resources are going towards getting the victims out of the situation. I would like to help ensure that perpetrators get help so that they don’t have future victims.
