Culture is an important concept to society, without culture, things would still be the same as the first ages of time, nothing would have developed. Culture is learned from generations after generations. They can seem almost natural, but people had to learn that culture to be able to become apart of it. Culture is also shared, which is now easier with the use of social media now. Culture is also symbolic, it means something for someone and something wouldn’t even mean anything if it wasn’t for a person linking a meaning to an object. Subcultures are groups that had to do with “the interaction of people’s perceptions of themselves with others’ view of them” according to the Chicago School of Sociology. There are now a little over 20 important subcultures, some that have died out or are slowly dying out and some that are still used today.
Bohemianism is one subculture that is still seen around today in clothes, music, and art. Bohemianism or shortened as “Bohemian” has many definitions, but one of the definitions by The American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy defines it as, “A descriptive term for a stereotypical way of life for artists and intellectuals. According to the stereotype, bohemians live in material poverty because they prefer their art or their learning to lesser goods; they are also unconventional in habits and dress, and sometimes in morals.” They are seen as wanderers and adventurers. Bohemianism is believed to have origins dating back from ancient history, yet is still seen as one of “the fastest growing new religion/lifestyle in the world,” as it contains elements from mythology, spirituality, and ideology.
