Because of urban and agricultural development and many other alterations, 50% of our wetlands have been destroyed nationwide. Wetlands destruction is a very serious problem, specifically here in Southern California where more than 90% of our wetlands have been demolished. Most of the wetlands still in existence are extremely degraded. Over the past few decades, a lot has been altered in the ecological reserve of Bolsa Chica. Much of the wetlands have been destroyed in order to make way for roads and buildings.
