In Bastard Out of Carolina we were introduced to Bone and Anney. However, The relationship between Bone and Anney is displayed as a love hate relationship. This novel shows us that Bone has hatred in her heart yet she's able to forgive her mother for what have occured in her life. Bone and Anney relationship is attributed by class, emotions, family, places and etcetera.
Bone and Anney have a love hate relationship due to the events that have transpired
throughout the novel. For instance, Bone was being abused both mentally physically and emotionally by Anney boyfriend Glen.
Glen abuses Bone emotionally when Bone refused to comply with his demands to tell Anney she wants them to be a family again. Glen also abused Bone both physically and mentally when he molested Bone in Aunt Alma's house; Anney decides to fault Bone instead of Glen."He rocked in and ground down, flexing and thrusting his hips. I felt like he was tearing me apart, my ass slapping against the floor with every thrust, burning and tear- ing and bruising."God!" I screamed with all the strength I had. While choosing Glen may have been a horrible mistake. All she wanted was a father for Bone to remove the the "ILLEGITIMATE" stamp off of Bone’s birth certificate. Both Anney and Bone emotions deterred their relationship. Bone has some really strong emotions that she doesn't express but, she masturbates as an outlet of her hatred. On the other hand, Anney emotional are discombobulated she's not really sure how to feel in various situations. With Bone and Anney being Boatwrights they feel as they are subject to being labeled as "white trash" and "troubled people" which didn't help but, harmed their mother-daughter relationship as a whole. In addition to that their environment was far from the best. Anney was alway moving Bone from one house to the next; Resse and Bone never had much to eat;they family was often judge by other because they were poor and didn't always look their best. Majority of these actions were compounded by Glen's abuse and Anney taking the wrong actions and her failure to be attentive to
