Bone and Anney have a love hate relationship due to the events that have transpired
throughout the novel. For instance, Bone was being abused both mentally physically and emotionally by Anney boyfriend Glen.

Their social class played a major role in their relationship; the "ILLEGITIMATE" stamp was very important to Anney; although, it didn't matter to Bone if effected Anney, which lead her to becoming desperately in need for her children a father. While choosing Glen may have been a horrible mistake. All she wanted was a father for Bone to remove the the "ILLEGITIMATE" stamp off of Bone’s birth certificate. Both Anney and Bone emotions deterred their relationship. Bone has some really strong emotions that she doesn't express but, she masturbates as an outlet of her hatred. On the other hand, Anney emotional are discombobulated she's not really sure how to feel in various situations. With Bone and Anney being Boatwrights they feel as they are subject to being labeled as "white trash" and "troubled people" which didn't help but, harmed their mother-daughter relationship as a whole. In addition to that their environment was far from the best. Anney was alway moving Bone from one house to the next; Resse and Bone never had much to eat;they family was often judge by other because they were poor and didn't always look their best. Majority of these actions were compounded by Glen's abuse and Anney taking the wrong actions and her failure to be attentive to
