Her father was entrusted with the legendary diamond by the museum, and he hides it in his newly-built model of the town of Saint-Malo that he built for Marie-Laure. Unfortunately, he is arrested by the Nazis soon after. After her father is captured, Marie-Laure joins the French resistance. All the while, Werner’s gift with electronics and radios has benefitted him greatly: he is now in a prestigious Nazi academy. The Nazis employ him to track illegal radio signals, which he hesitates to do because he sees it as an evil deed. He wonders why science is now used for evil instead of for good and wonder. His path meets with Marie-Laure’s during the invasion of Normandy, where he was deployed to Marie-Laure’s town to track down radio broadcasts. He saves Marie-Laure from soldiers and brings her to safety, forming a strong bond with her in the short time they spend together. Werner is later killed by a landmine. The book ends with Marie-Laure meeting Werner’s sister many years later and discovering that the model of the town that her father had built that contained the diamond was with Werner when he
