Exposition: The story starts with Stanton giving background information about times in the Great Depression and the success of the sports teams in Detroit. He also explains the racist group forming called the, Black Legion. This story follows the star catcher and baseball team manager of the Detroit Tigers, Mickey Cochrane, and Dayton Dean, a full-time working electrician who soon joins the Legion. The reader quickly learns that Cochrane is a very successful, hard working man who has a passion for the game. The team's success has caused newspaper writers and fans to become obsessed with the players and their lives.

As they talked in the car, Poole talked dearly about his wife and daughter, which caused Dean to begin feeling that something was fishy with Harvey’s tale of the beatings. But Dean knew his orders, and he knew he’d be killed if he didn’t obey them. On the same night that Roy Pidcock was killed, Dayton Dean pulled his gun out and ordered Poole to step out of the car, but Poole didn’t fight it. Dean fired at Poole eight times. Davis scolded Dayton for firing too early before he got to finish his speech. Dean walked home that night with a cigar in his mouth.

Falling action: Detective Jack Harvill took on the case and felt like he hit a stone wall. Poole’s wife had no clue why he was killed and Roy Pickford’s death was considered suicide, but cops were confused on his behavior the days leading up to his death and how he got to the island by himself. The cops arrested Harvey Davis, and at the station police told Harvey they knew of the meeting and killing of Poole. A widow of a Legion member was brought in for questioning and she spelt everything she knew. Dayton Dean was one of the many legionnaires to be arrested after a raid on his
