The novel “The Lovely Bones” is started off about a girl named Susie Salmon who was raped and murdered on December 6, 1973 at 14 years old by an old man named Mr. Harvey. Susie was on her way home one day after school through a cornfield when she bumped into Mr. Harvey. An old man who has been watching Susie for a while and formulated a scheme to rape and/or murder her if it came to it. To lure Susie in to begin his plan, he claimed that he had just built an underground clubhouse for the kids in the neighborhood and he wanted an opinion on it from Susie. Susie walks into the clubhouse and realizes she has made a mistake and is trapped. Upon hearing this, Susie’s dad decides to find out evidence by himself by following Mr. Harvey at night into the cornfield with a baseball bat, only to get beat up with it by the boyfriend of Susie’s old friend Clarissa. After this event, Lindsey suspects Mr. Harvey for being the murderer as well and she gets the idea to break into his house to find evidence. One day she sees Mr. Harvey leaving his house and she makes her move. She finds the drawings of his underground “clubhouse” he made to trap and murder Susie. During this time, Mr. Harvey arrives home after 10 minutes and enters the house, hears her upstairs and rapidly runs up the stairs to see Lindsey jump out his bedroom window and sprint back to her house with the evidence. Mr. Harvey flees town after this incident and the police are unable to locate his whereabouts. Time passes and Susie accepts herself in heaven after she has the understanding that her family is all well and they are aware of her murderer. The last scene in the book is Mr. Harvey preying on another girl during winter and an icicle drops and smashes on his head.
