The median household income in Boone county is $50,813. 93.7% of the population has a high school education or higher. there are 52 public schools as well as 12 colleges in Boone County, Missouri, serving 23,391 students. Columbia is the only community in Boone County with a public transportation system. Transportation to health care has been identified as a barrier and there is a need for senior care in rural areas. According to the Windshield survey, in rural areas such as Sturgeon, there is a lack of healthcare. If a person were to be sick, they would have to travel at least 10-20 miles to receive treatment, which can be difficult for the poorer part of the community with the lack of transportation and cost of transportation can be an issue, this is especially an issue for all rural towns of Boone County because Columbia is the only city in Boone County with public transportation, they also are the home of the two main hospitals. If there is an emergency people would need to wait for the closest ambulance to get there, which could take 15 minutes and they may not have that time to spare.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths of Boone County is numerous options for health care; however, the data of interest is that only the big cities, such as Columbia, have easy access to them as they are the only ones with public transportation. Boone County is 685 square miles; Columbia is only 63.51 square miles. That leaves 621.49 miles outside of Columbia needs to travel to get essential needs such as health care.
