Nearly 75% of people diagnosed with BPD are women, but recent research suggests that men may be almost as frequently affected by BPD.” (NAMI) It is thought that women are diagnosed more than men, but they have come to find that men who have BPD have been previously misdiagnosed with either post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. ******
Predisposing Factors The cause of BPD is not understood, but it is believed that it results from a combination of predisposing factors including genetics, environmental factors, and brain function. There is no known gene that is said to directly cause BPD, but studies have shown strong hereditary links. It can affect relationships, careers, self-image, school, and social activities. This can result in the following:
• Repeated job changes or losses
• Not completing an education
• Multiple legal issues, such as jail time
• Conflict-filled relationships, marital stress or divorce
• Self-injury, such as cutting or burning, and frequent hospitalizations
• Involvement in abusive relationships
• Unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, motor vehicle accidents and physical fights due to impulsive and risky behavior
• Attempted or completed suicide (“Borderline Personality Disorder”)
In addition to these social factors of complication patients may also carry multiple diagnoses that will also affect treatment and activities of daily living (ADL’s). Possible diagnoses may include:
• Depression
• Alcohol or other substance misuse
• Anxiety disorders
• Eating disorders
• Bipolar disorder
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
