These rocks are from a time when there was only one continent on the surface of the earth called Pangaea. During the subsequent 400 million years, tectonic action broke up the super continent and newer smaller continental pieces floated to different positions across the planet (Bergen, 47, 49). Then, between 150 and 70 million years ago, the region that is San Diego County became an area of immense volcanic and continuing tectonic activity. During that huge chunk of time (to our time sense), shallow seas became rolling plains, mountain ranges were raised and worn away again by erosion and the ocean advanced and receded many miles, many times. By 40 million years past, relative quiet prevailed in the earth’s crust in the region. Then, about 22 million years ago, the earth’s plates began to move …show more content…
This portion of the desert’s altitude ranges from mountains several thousand feet high to the bottom of the Salton Trough at 245 feet below sea level. The park it’s self ranges from 15 feet to 6,193 feet above sea level. Since the ancient Colorado River delta, which separates the Sea of Cortez from the Salton Sea, is only 42 feet high (Remeika, 33), it wouldn’t take much (geologically and tectonically speaking) for the delta to be breached and the sea to fill the trough again(Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Volunteer Handbook,
