The first explosion occurred April 15, 2013 to 14 pm on Boylston Street in the Back Bay neighborhood, just meters from the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon, near Copley Square. It occurred on the left of the riders who completed this important marathon held annually in the city and whose edition was dedicated to the memory of victims of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 14 December 2012 in neighboring Connecticut. It affected mainly the public massed behind barriers opposed to the main building of the Boston Public Library, and a 78 years old rider, Bill Iffrig, was sent to the ground by the blast. At that moment, the majority had already crossed the finish line.

The investigation followed very different tracks: international terrorism, American extremists, isolated act. On April 16, several people interviewed by police, including a Saudi national, whose house in Revere was searched, before being exonerated. The police had clear images of one and two suspects dropping bombs through surveillance videos. These photos were then published by the FBI, which identified two young people, the Tsarnaïev family brothers. (Ford,
