The Boxers United in Righteousness, or Yihequan, started as a secret society in northern china and was composed of mainly farmers, poor people, laborers, and other peasants. They were called “Boxers” by the westerners because of their physical fitness and martial arts that they practiced. These Boxers believed that spirit possession and martial arts would be enough to protect them from bullets and cannons, and would allow them to defeat the foreigners.
