In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, bravery played a key role in the survival of the characters. To survive the camps, Shmuel had to show courage at all times, even if he was scared. Lieutenant Kotler, who was Shmuel’s kapo, made Shmuel very afraid all the time. Even Bruno, Shmuel’s friend, who said he wasn’t scared of Lieutenant Kotler, became very afraid even in the presence of him. Even in Maus, Anja says, “Sometimes I think about running into the [electric] fence and ending it all, but then I think of you and it gives me strength.” It shows that without motivation and courage, she would let herself die.
In Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne had to show courage while hiding in the annex from the Nazis. She also says, “I was so scared someone might hear it [the radio] that I literally begged Father to take me back upstairs.” This shows that it was really hard to do almost anything in the hiding place, let alone show bravery, which Anne accomplished. Also, like the rest of these sources, everyone was separated from their families and that is difficult to go through in hard times.
Courage is one of the best ways to respond to conflict, and used often, as shown in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Maus I and II, and Anne Frank. These examples were very extreme, but conflict can happen in everyday life, like presenting a nerve-wracking project, or having a fight with your friend; but it is always good to have
