Bradstreet's Allusion

Anne Bradstreet’s biblical allusion in “Verses upon the Burning of Our House” to the book of Job is effectively accurate. She states, “I blest His name that gave and took”() in allusion, if not in repetition, to Job’s own comment in the latter half of the Biblical book of the same name of the Lord giving and then taking, but still, the name of the Lord is blessed. As a Puritan, Bradstreet would have read, lived, and breathed the Bible. As such, she would be well aware of Job’s own trials and would have possibly had the passage in Job memorized. By nearly repeating Job’s words verbatim, Bradstreet assures that anytime she reads the passage, she would be reminded of Job’s own struggle and ultimate triumph in realizing that God is still good.
