After Brenda graduated from nursing school in Haiti, her parents decided to move with the family to America for better life opportunities. When they arrived, their expectations of the country diminished due to the competitive culture and economy. As poor immigrants, they enrolled Brenda into a community college where she was forced to pay for classes on her own. The college required all non-English speakers to take an ESL class in order to enter into the nursing program. Brenda took a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) job to gain experience in healthcare, since her Haitian education was not enough to land her a nursing job. After classes, she worked nightshifts at a nursing home taking care of elderly people. Her duties were plenty. Brenda took care of the elderly like babies. Generally, CNAs did more work than registered nurses, despite nurses were paid far more. There were also large differences in ways that the nurses treated certain patients. The white patients received more attention than non-white patients. Brenda thought the system was unfair and wanted to complain. She was very reluctant to complain out of fear of losing her job. One day, a nurse which Brenda worked with closely, forgot to give a patient his pills. When Brenda walked into the patient’s room, a heavy stench came from the bed. Brenda knew immediately by the stench that the patient was dead. She pressed a red button to alert the nurse and the nurse came walking in.
The nurse began to blame Brenda for her own mistake. Although Brenda spoke little English, she knew enough words to stand up for herself. Soon, they both began to argue and the nurse, slapped Brenda across
