Brian Balmages is a well-renowned composer, conductor, and producer. He is also a performer, and even educator to this day. Brian has had many major accomplishments throughout his entire career and he has had a major impact on the musical world. He has also been given multiple awards and honors along his journey as a talented musician. Of all his accomplishment, Balmages is most commonly known for his compositions. He has created multiple compositions for both band and orchestra in a variety of settings and groups.
Brian’s interest in music began when he was very young, this was partially contributed to his parents. In elementary school, he played the trumpet, like his father, who was actually his band director at the time. As a child Balmages also enjoyed playing the piano, he played the piano all through his childhood. As a young boy he had always imagined that one day he would become a music teacher, just like his parents had…show more content… Although he has a masters in music, Balmages “did not major in music education, performance, composition or conducting” ( “Band Composer Series: Brian Balmages”). Even so, the music Balmages has been heard and played by people all around the world and in a variety of settings. For this reason, it is no surprise that in the year 2010 he received the Henry G. Phillips Award for Compositional Excellence. The works of Balmages can also be heard live and even in film since they are simpler to translate in to a movie. In 2012, Balmages received another award called The A.Austin Harding Award. This award is given to people for their “valuable and dedicated service to the bands of America” (American School of Band Directors Association) which Balmages clearly displayed.
