Brother André could not hold a job due to chronic stomach pains. Brother André came to the Holy Cross Brother in 1870. When Brother André went to Congregation of Holy Cross he was twenty-five and could not read or write. At first the people in the Congregation of Holy Cross thought Brother André was going to the religious out of depression not vocation. Brother André explained that he was desperate but he was devoted to God and Saint Joseph.
Brother André was born named Alfred Bessette on August 9, 1845 in Quebec. Brother André was orphaned at the age of twelve Brother André had small amount of formal education. Brother André at the age of twenty-five became a Holy Cross brother. Brother André having chronic stomach pains the Congregation assigned Brother André as doorkeeper at Notre Dame College. Brother André worked as doorkeeper for nearly forty years. Brother André as doorkeeper greed visitors and treated their needs.
Brother André was able to minister to the sick. Brother André was able to heal the sick through Trolley station across the street from Notre Dame College. thanks to the Congregation of Holy Cross.
