Brother André was born named Alfred Bessette on August 9, 1845 in Quebec. Brother André was orphaned at the age of twelve Brother André had small amount of formal education. Brother André at the age of twenty-five became a Holy Cross brother. Brother André having chronic stomach pains the Congregation assigned Brother André as doorkeeper at Notre Dame College. Brother André worked as doorkeeper for nearly forty years. Brother André as doorkeeper greed visitors and treated their needs.
