Cabeza De Vaca survived the challenging wilderness of Texas thanks to being a great navigator, communicator, and because of being a great survivalist. In the year of 1528, Cabeza De Vaca washed ashore the Gulf Coast of Texas, along with 249 other men. Originally, De Vaca was on a mission to find the New World, under command of the Conquistador Panfilo de Narvaez. Powerful currents sent the ships off course, causing them to land on a modern-day Tampa Bay, Florida. Since they were starving and in need of finding a new home, Narvaez had the weapons melted down and rafts built from the remains. Each raft held 50 men, but only two rafts landed on an unknown island, now known as Galveston Island, Texas. Within just a few months, the original 250 men had dwindled down to only four. After Cabeza was one of the few left, he was taken captive by Indians and was forced to be a slave. After a couple years, De Vaca befriended them, though one day he became lost, totally and completely naked.
