Brine Shrimps are native to 250 locations all over the world in mainly salt lakes. They are crustaceans prominent in bodies of saltwater such as the flats in Salt Lake City, Utah. Adult Brine Shrimp grow about 8mm in length and will produce egg cysts that hatch, producing shrimp larvae. Shrimp larvae, ‘nauplii’, mature at about 2-4 weeks. Salt lakes are prone to drying out, killing all the shrimp that previous inhabited the flat. In a day and age where climate change is hurting the environment more than before, these types of situations must be taken into consideration to make sure that a species is not wiped out. According to a Brine Shrimp Hatchery study, “In nauplii, Growth is optimal at 28°C and 35 ppt and drops below pH 7. Lethal temperature …show more content…

Four beakers were labelled 1, 2, 3 and 4 all are 100 cm3 beakers

2. 100 cm3 of dechlorinated water and 2 grams of sea salt is placed in the bottom of each beaker. These mixtures are then stirred until a homogenous solution develops in every beaker

3. A tiny pinch of egg cysts are placed onto large sheets of white papers. A paper is dampened with a couple drops of seawater and then lightly swabbed over the cysts to pick them up. The eggs are then counted out to 20 by using a magnifying glass

4. The paper is then dipped into the beaker to wash the egg cysts into the water. The paper is then removed from the beaker using forceps

5. Beakers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are placed into separate incubators at temperatures at different temperatures, 20 C, 25 C, 30 C and 35 C

6. On day one and two, the number of eggs that hatched are counted

7. The brine shrimps are counted using a fine glass pipette and placed in a small beaker of salt water to remove them from the hatching beaker

8. The number of egg cysts that hatched successfully is recorded for each
