Characters and their interactions in A Canticle for Leibowitz. Brother Francis Gerard plays the major role in the 'Fiat Homo', he is the one who meets Isaac Leibowitz also referred as a wandering monk. Unlike The Road the main protagonists in the Canticle are not emphasized as much. Brother Francis shows strong faith in God and science, which is seen through his interactions with other members of the order "I don't know. But I have a certain faith that the "electron" existed at one time, although I don't know how it was constructed or what it might have been used for." (Miller, 1959, 87) 'Certain faith' emphasizes that Francis believes not only in God, but science as well. (Miller, 1959, 238) This quote reveals that Dom Paulo is afraid that humanity should carefully extract the ancient technologies under the supervision, and Dom Paulo seems like he doesn't trust Thaddeo, as he is working for his master, rather than humanity. Aboot Jethrah Zerchi is the main protagonist of the 'Fiat Voluntas Tua', he is portrayed differently than the other protagonists. Zerchi's role in this part is similar to the Leibowitz, as Miller indicates that the Church is already aware that another nuclear holocaust is inevitable, he is responsible for sending out the monks and current technologies into the space, so the Church could continue being an important part of humanity in the future. The role Zerchi is to continue carrying the legacy of the Church and 'knowledge' which started with the wandering monk Leibowitz. It seems that Miller made Zerchi a reincarnation of Leibowitz that makes the apocalypse cycle complete, which may indicate that this cycle of knowledge conservation will only continue leading humanity to endless
