This seminar was a discussion between Bruce Chassy and Greg Jaffe. Bruce Chassy is a professor emeritus of food safety and nutritional sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Greg Jaffe is the director of the project on biotechnology for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. He is also a member of the advisory committee for the Secretary of Agriculture. The seminar was based on questions that were asked to both participants. The first question asked by the moderator was, “Why do we see an increased backlash against genetically modified foods?” Professor Chassy believes this backlash has been caused by a disconnect between science and society and that scientists have done a poor job of communicating with the public.
