Growing up in my family household was not always easy, and not for the obvious reasons. My mom was a single parent raising three very strong-willed children. When I was about ten or eleven, my mother and I started having some serious issues getting along. I had confided in a friend’s mother who, at the time without my knowledge, contacted the police and a social worker was sent to visit my house. Through discussions with the social worker and with my mother we were able to see eye to eye, and develop a healthier relationship within a few home visits. These home visits really had a profound effect on my relationship with my mother. If I fast-forward about eight years, to the time when I was applying to college, I had the idea of becoming a lawyer. In the first two years before the official BSW program, I was able to participate in an internship with Beacon Hospice. This experience helped me learned how to connect with someone who is different than you and then use this connection to better his or her life in some way. This experience also added to the skills that I have developed throughout my years working with the public. I have had to work since I was sixteen in order to help support myself since my mom was a single parent of three. Through these jobs, I have worked my way to a manager position in which I am responsible resolving conflicts and handling multiple situations. These skills added to the skills that I have learned in the internship and multiple classes at Western New England University. With these skills I believe that I will be able to help others, solve problems, and make positive connections with clients as a social
