With Buddhism spreading rapidly in China, it became a popular alternative to the people of China while officials and followers of other religions did not relish the thought of the new up and coming religion. Ancient China believed itself to be the best culture in the world and considered Buddhism to be followed by barbarians. Although several of the documents argue to stop the spread of Buddhism in China, this was based largely on the upper classes' fear of loss of control.
