Bullying
Peer victimization, also known as bullying or peer harassment, is any physical, verbal, or psychological maltreatment that takes place in and around social settings like school. Bullying often takes place in the context of the mesosystem in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model as preschool children interact with peers in different settings at school like the classroom and playground. Bullying is a serious problem that starts early in development, so parents and teachers need to be aware of warning signs so they can intervene as soon as possible for the sake of the bullies and the victims (Bojczyk&Shriner 2012 p. 5.1). A national bullying prevention week was a campaign created in the United States in 2006 and was founded by PACER”s National Center for Bullying. The campaign is traditionally held the first week in October and is a nationwide event that unites communities to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Bullying can have devastating effects on kids such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, and depression to name a few (Bullying Month 2012). One activity to promote awareness of bullying within the school is by organizing a poster contest. After completing a lesson on bullying the information that was learned should be reviewed for understanding of what bullying is and the roles of the bystanders and victims. Divide the classroom into groups, possibly a total of 3 groups, and have them create a poster that displays the roles of the bully, the victim, or bystanders. Have other classes be involved in the poster contest and have their posters display ways students can help prevent bullying and make school safe. The students may use pencils, crayons, paint, markers, etc. whatever they wish to create their posters. Then get other teachers, the school counselor and art teacher to help judge the posters based on the judging criteria of the contest, and which ever posters is the winner will be featured in the hallway near the main entrance of the school. A lesson plan to help understanding bullying and focus on health and math would be for kids to complete an anonymous survey about
