I met with Annette Matherly to get a better idea about her job and get her input on some questions I had. Annette expressed knowing she wanted to care for people from a young age. She explained growing up that her mother was always sick and she often would go to work with her grandmother who was a caregiver. She gives credit to both her mother and grandmother for inspiring her to pursue something correlated with caring for people. Annette explained her initial intention was to become an international nanny and it wasn’t until she was denied that she decided to pursue nursing. Once she was in the nursing field she fell in love with the burn unit and disaster preparedness. She typically teaches adolescents about fires and the dangers of fires. Along with teaching at schools she also educates families, EMS, and the community on how to treat a burn patient. Annette explained her biggest projects right now revolve around disaster plans. These plans include a “patient transfer and movement across a region project, so we are trying to move patients from a non burn center to a burn center”. Her other major project is a 96-hour project with online e modules that will assist non burn centers on how to provide care to burn patients for 96 hours. Annette expressed her favorite part about her job is getting to work with a bunch of people and creating a “think tank” for these big projects. Annette expressed having a love hate relationship with the to-do list she has. “The to-do list is far too long to work on by myself”, Annette expressed the list of things to do becomes overwhelming, but it’s also amazing because it forces her to work with people (like interns) to get things
