On September 14, 2010, a bill was passed in France that made it illegal to wear any type of full face covering. The law went into effect on April 11, 2011, and this sent a small percentage of France’s citizens into an uproar. There are approximately five to six million Muslims that live in France currently, and the number of those who actually wore full face coverings or burqas was about 2,000. This law was put into place to protect all citizens, including the ones that wore the burqa, and unite those who wear the burqa with those who do not. In 2013, a Muslim woman that was wearing a burqa had a miscarriage due to being beaten by two men, because she was wearing the garment. France also set into place with the law a fine that you must pay if you are caught wearing any full face covering. The fine is 150 euros ($170). Many women now that continue to wear the burqa do so as an act of defiance. A female citizen of France referred to as S.A.S. that was born in 1990 with a Pakistani background filed a complaint to the French state on the day that the law went into effect. Women that wear burqas could be victims of abuse, attacks, beatings, tortures, and much more, but nobody would ever know, so no one could help. The burqa hides the entire body. So nobody would be able to see bruises, cuts, or scars. A woman could be forced by her husband or another man to wear the burqa to hide everything that he has done to her. A woman could also choose to wear the burqa herself to hide things she has done to inflict harm on herself. Depression could make a woman do things like this, and a burqa would help her cover up all of the scars. With the burqa ban in place, it can make women that are suffering seek help instead of hiding
